Orthopedic Pet Beds: How To Choose The Right One

Jan 8, 2023

Pets, like people, suffer from various conditions and aches and pains that can make getting adequate rest almost impossible. In such cases giving your pet an orthopedic pet bed can help to take the stress off sore bones and joints allowing them to lay more comfortably which will result in them resting better.

Why Use Pet Beds

Have you ever gone camping with nothing between you and the hard ground to sleep on except that sleeping bag? If so, you probably know that even the healthiest individual often wakes with aches and pains after a night sleeping on a hard surface. This also happens to your pets. Sleeping on the cold hard floor of your home can cause those joints to ache even in the healthiest of pets. So, providing them with a good cushioned bed is essential to maintain their joint and bone health. You could even say that almost all pet beds provide some orthopedic benefits to your pet. Elderly pets, pets with arthritis, dogs with hip dysplasia and large breeds of dogs need more than an average bed, they need an orthopedic pet bed that will actively cushion those sore bones and joints and relieve some of the stress on those places that are painful.

Things To Consider When Purchasing a Pet Bed

There are several things to consider when purchasing a bed. Here are some of the things you should think about when choosing the ideal bed for your pet.

  • Size matters. A bed will do little for your pet if it is too small for them to rest comfortable in. Your pet's bed should be large enough for them to stretch out in whatever position they like without feeling crowded or part of them hanging off the bed. Even if your cat or dog likes to curl up most of the time, there will be times when they want to sleep stretched out and they need a large enough bed to do so.
  • Amount and Type of Filler. You also need to consider the amount and type of filler that a bed has. Too little filler and your pet won't be much better off than they would be sleeping on the floor. Foam is usually the best filler for pet beds as it stays in one place and holds up longer than most other fillers. For the pet that needs an orthopedic pet bed, memory foam is the best type of filler for them as it gives support exactly where your pet needs it. A two- or three-inch foam filler is usually more than sufficient for most pet’s needs.
  • The height of your pet bed is also important. While there are beds designed to look and preform like beds for humans keep in mind that any bed that has added height due to the use of legs in the design may make getting onto and off the bed more difficult for older pets or those that have certain conditions such as arthritis or hip dysplasia. If your pet incurs pain every time they get on or off their bed chances are good, they won't use their bed.
